I played this on the Japanese Hard Type version. Differences from the American FFIV on SNES (Localized as Final Fantasy II in 1992) include faster enemies and enemies having more HP. One thing Hard Type has over the USA and Easy Type versions is items like Hourglasses, Hermes' Shoes, and whatnot, which change the battle state. Without Light Curtains, you would have to grind a LOT to beat the insta-kill doors in the Sealed Cave, and without Hermes' Shoes, Barbariccia/Valvalis would be nigh impossible due to her having more actions than you overall.
The only monster I couldn't beat, even at Lv99, was Plague. That's because he uses Death Sentence immediately, and it's statistically impossible to kill anything with a solo character if your death counter winds down that fast; especially if its HP total is like 32000.
Everything else went down pretty smoothly, including Evilwall, surprisingly. In Hard Type, thanks to Light Curtains and my old BradyGames guide (for the maps, since I hadn't played in a while), I could figure out which doors were necessary to kill to progress through the dungeon. Light Curtains are a little bit of a pain in the ass to come by. Levelling in that cave is also really slow, all the more reason to get to the moon as fast as possible. Actually, y'know, I'd really just recommend skipping that dungeon until you level up on the moon, as you need to be a minimum of 65 and throw a Bacchus' Wine to be able to have enough damage output against the boss.
I almost had some trouble against the 4 Fiends in the Giant of Babil. I'm pretty sure it's not possible to beat Rubicante in that fight without levelling a metric fuckton or having a bunch of Elixirs. I was at Lv 95 or so during that fight, and still had to throw 7 Elixirs because of his raw damage output.
Zeromus was a sissy from Outer Space and got his ass kicked.
btw, yes, dummy, I can actually read Japanese well enough to navigate through the menus. =p It's all Kana, 150 characters over 2 alphabets. Not hard, you can figure it out pretty fast if you wanted to. Some trial and error happened, but only when I forgot the name of a specific item I was trying to use. =p
